Blending Tradition and Modernity Through Sculptural Narratives of the Feminine
Born in 1956 in Andhra Pradesh, G. Ravinder Reddy is a celebrated Indian sculptor known for his bold, stylized depictions of the female form. He pursued his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda between 1975 and 1982. His academic journey continued overseas with a diploma in sculpture from Goldsmiths College of Art in 1983, followed by a ceramics course at the Royal College of Art, London in 1984.
Reddy’s sculptural works—often monumental heads or robust, full-bodied forms—center around women as powerful, iconic figures. He draws heavily from classical Indian art traditions, such as those of the Gupta, Maurya, Amravathi, and Chola periods, as well as influences from West African art and the Yakshi forms of the Kushan and Mathura schools. His use of striking colors—gold, red, yellow, and blue—combined with highly expressive, confrontational gazes, evokes a sense of both reverence and challenge. Reddy believes the eyes of his sculptures should engage the viewer so directly that they leave a lasting impact.
His work has been shown in major exhibitions around the world, including at Grosvenor Vadehra (London), Bose Pacia Gallery (New York), Le Jardin d’Acclimatation (Paris), the Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh), and the Sackler Gallery (Washington D.C.). His sculptures are held in esteemed collections such as the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan), Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (USA), and the Queensland Art Gallery (Australia).
Reddy currently lives and works in Visakhapatnam, India.
